The Independence Day of the United States is a prominent date for Macharaviaya where the contribution of his countryman, Bernardo de Galvez, to American independence is commemorated since leading the colonists against the British in Florida, he won the battle of Pensacola.

Born in Macharaviaya in 1746 and appointed governor of Luisana in 1776, his speech was considered so decisive for American independence that he marched with George Washington marched in the victoria paradade on the streets of Philadelphia.

Among the activities performed during the festival in Macharaviaya, they include performances and historical military parades by the Grenadiers and Damas de Gálvez and Torrijos 1831 associations, as well as the tasting of typical mead liquor fermentation of honey , which was the drink of the Spanish troops in the time.

This weekend Ronda is having one of the most spectacular events in Inland Andalucía. The famous “Ronda Romántica” Fair and festival.

During this three days, Ronda will return to the difficult and romantic days of the XIX century. At that time, the city was blessed and cursed by many events of love and hate, pride and vengueance.

Spain was a very different place ; bad communications, profound misery, and big social differences. The rich where very rich, and the poor where very poor.

In this specific time and place, a special human character appeared :  the “bandolero” .

TOLOX FESTIVAL LAS MOZAS FUEGO Y AMOR

When : 6th,7th & 8th of December 2014

Tolox, in 1570, suffered a deep and brutal transformation. their residents had supported the rebels who fought in the Moorish war. After years of bitterness and humiliation, they had decided to rise in a suicidal war, which led them to an end. 6, 7 and 8 December these events are remembered in the village of Tolox, a tradition rooted in the sixteenth century and known as the Day of “The Mozas”.

The residents of the town, draw their own costumes following models of the time, are preparing recipes dining that will lead to the kitchen of another era. And a theatrical spectacle in which many residents involved of the locality, give life to the characters and events of that fateful year.

What can the visitor find in the town of Tolox in the XVI century?

An atmosphere that will take you back in time, making the space in a small corner of Tolox of 1570. And within that space, Moorish and Christian taverns offer us a variety of 40 different tapas-inspired dishes and meats of the XVI century. Many will remember our today tapas.

Synopsis of the play:

The play will be represented in 12 scenes, a tribute to a part of our Hispanic history of being expeled for the sole reason of having different customs than the ones marked by the ideology at the time. The war is over and the rebels have defeated the Moors. even so try to keep their customs, despite persecution and humiliation to which the victors subjected them Christians. Peter and Mary are a Moorish marriage that has experienced first person hardships of war. Pedro, defeated in last Battle near Istan, now a slave of the Marquis and meets the orders benefited from the locality. Mary does not give up and retains the status of a free woman. But they are besieged by Christians. Especially for Doña Berengaria, a perverse woman , aided by his power that definitely wants to humiliate them.

The next 18 and 19 October in Plaza de La Libertad and the Plaza de la Constitution de Mijas, there will be the  historical reenactment “Mijas: one people against Napoleon’s soldiers”, organized by the municipality of Mijas in collaboration with the Historical and Cultural Association and Peña 1831 Torrijos of Mijas. All are invited to attend who are attracted by the town’s history.

Experience this historical reenactments by 1831 Torrijos Association, which since 2003 recreates the landing of General Torrijos at the Mijas beach of “El Charcón”, and does the anual “March over the Torrijos Road”.

At 21 hours starting on Saturday the recreation at the “Plaza de la Libertad” and consists in recreating the moment in which a riders Regiment of Malaga brings a letter from the military governor of the capital in which he tells the mayor of Mijas of the fall of the city of Málaga in the hands of Napoleon’s troops.

There, the character who plays the ruler of the town reads a proclamation warning of the approach of the French Army to the village of Mijas.

Now the next day, at 11:30 hours on the same site, there will be the enlistment of more than 70 people, who would become part of Mijas Infantry Regiment and Malaga, and most likely died at the bloody battle of Ocaña (Toledo).

The event,is the first time it is performed, as it has been this year when we found a notice in a newspaper of the time (1808) that revealed this fact. It is a tribute to those citizens of Mijas.

The latter performance will take place in Constitution Square from 12:15 hours and will see the appearance of Mijas in a 1810 market day, the occupation of people and town  by the French troops and their repression, the actions of the Mijas guerrilla, and the killing by the french of two of Mijas patriots, Quero Blanco and Garcia Moreno. It all ends with the release of Mijas by the troops of General Ballesteros.

A little ghost story : In all the area there is the legend that the tower of the village you can hear voices and strange sounds that give you goosebumps; some think they are the spirits of the brave liberals who roam these parts, showing their discontent because nobody helped them!!!!

For the fourth year in a row, Macharaviaya is celebrating U.S. Independence Day, paying tribute to local military leader Bernardo de Gálvez and his role helping the Thirteen Colonies to fight for independence.

This peculiar feast, only held in Macharaviaya among Spanish municipalities on account of the town’s strong ties with this historical event, draws growing numbers of visitors from various countries. They join locals in a series of cultural activities taking place in the historic district of this town in Axarquía.

Activities include a recreation of historical-military events, a vintage costume parade and the hoisting of the Spanish and American flags, among others.

Bernardo de Gálvez was born in Macharaviaya in 1746. He was part of the Spanish support to the Thirteen Colonies in their quest for independence and led Spanish forces against Britain in the Revolutionary War, defeating the British at the Siege of Pensacola (1781) and reconquering Florida for Spain.
